Your calves — the two-headed gastrocnemius you can see and the flat soleus hiding beneath it — push you off the ground on every step, sprint and jump. Strong lower legs improve ankle stability, running economy and jumping power, and they finish off a physique in a way no pair of trousers can hide. Because they carry you all day, they are also famously stubborn to grow.
Take the stairs two at a time, chase down a bus, or leap for a rebound, and your calves fire before anything else. To train them just as deliberately, each exercise here explains setup and tempo, contrasts bent-knee and straight-knee activation, and shows how to load a calf raise on nothing more than a stair step at home or a machine at the gym.
Calves tolerate volume that would flatten bigger muscles, so training them three or more times per week is realistic. Sink into a full stretch at the bottom, pause each rep briefly, and rotate standing and seated work — Bifit grades every option by difficulty so your progression stays logical.
